The Fourth was supposed to be the peak. A noon parade down Garfield Parkway, a Bandstand concert at 7:30, fireworks over the ocean at dusk, and the town's 125th birthday layered on top of America's 250th. Then the heat advisory came, and the calendar bent.
If you own here, you already know the parade didn't step off on July 3. What you may not have mapped yet is how much of the season it dragged with it. The climax of Bethany's 125th year has quietly moved from the first weekend of July to the last one of the summer, which changes the way a resident should read the next six weeks.
The town made the call on the Tuesday before the holiday. Due to an extreme-heat advisory, Bethany Beach's Fourth of July Parade, scheduled for Friday, July 3, at noon, was canceled and rescheduled for Labor Day weekend, when it will celebrate that holiday as well as the town's 125th anniversary, now with fireworks and a drone show. The Saturday fireworks and the Uncaged concert still ran on July 4, so the pyrotechnics happened on schedule. The procession, the float awards, and the full civic ceremony did not.
That matters because the parade is the town's largest single gathering of the year, and it usually pulls the Jazz Funeral into its wake. The annual Jazz Funeral is still scheduled for Labor Day, with details to come from organizers. For the first time in memory, both the parade and the Jazz Funeral will land on the same weekend, with a drone show stacked on top. If you have out-of-town family who normally come for July 4, the invitation you want to send is for the weekend of August 29 through September 7.
Concert programming this year was built around the anniversary, and the strongest tribute nights fall after July 20. The remaining schedule at 1 Garfield Parkway is denser and more genre-varied than the June slate:
Events Director Julie Malewski has said Bethany audiences love rock, especially tributes, and this season delivers plenty of both. Led Zeppelin tribute Kashmir, Rolling Stones tribute Satisfaction and cover band Kategory 5 all encompass the hard-rock genre. The Seven Wonders Fleetwood Mac tribute and Real Diamond Neil Diamond tribute cover soft rock. Eagles tribute 7 Bridges represent country-rock. The Rock Orchestra performs trop rock with a Jimmy Buffett tribute. High Noon masters Southern rock. Wednesdays in July still carry the Family Nights slot at 6:00 p.m., and Monday Movies on the Bandstand run through August 31.
A practical seating note that trips up new owners every year: bench seating is provided free of charge, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. If you are walking down from the north end, the folding chair is not optional.
The farmers' market is quietly having its own milestone year. In 2026, the country celebrates its 250th anniversary, Bethany Beach its 125th, and the Bethany Beach Farmers' Market opened Sunday, May 31 for its 20th season. The market runs at the PNC Bank parking lot at Garfield Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue, Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon, through September 6.
Here is the wrinkle worth knowing. Due to where Memorial Day fell on the calendar, the market will have 15 Sundays this year versus its normal 14, one more week of local goodies. An extra Sunday sounds small until you realize that late-August peaches, sweet corn, and the first fall greens all compete for the same table space, and the additional week gives Bennett Orchards and the other stone-fruit growers one more shot at a full harvest window before Labor Day closes it out. A new vendor this season is Carey Apiary and Farm, joining the returning favorites with raw honey, raw pollen, hand and lip salve, dog paw balm, leather conditioner, and beeswax candles, operated by Patrick, a Master Beekeeper running 50 hives.
If Sundays don't work, the Sea Colony market on Wednesdays at 33546 Market Place runs 8 a.m. to noon through September 2. Two markets, two ends of town, one summer.
Between the Bandstand shows and the market Sundays, the town runs a lower-tempo layer that residents use more than visitors do. Parking is limited, especially during the holiday weekend, and visitors should be mindful of parade day road closures. Bench seating is first come, first served, and folding chairs are welcome. Weather delays and cancellations may occur. Translate that into a resident habit: if you can walk or bike to the boardwalk, do. The Bandstand is at 1 Garfield Parkway, the market is one block west at the PNC lot, and both are inside the walkable core.
Dining anchors for after-concert nights hold up the way they always have. The Blue Coat Inn on Blue Hen Lane is Bethany's strongest option for a more settled dinner, with a menu of Delaware seafood and American classics in a dining room that books out on July 4th weekend, and for a casual boardwalk lunch before the parade, Bethany Blues BBQ on Garfield Parkway is a local favorite for smoked meats, cornbread, and sides. Mango's on the boardwalk stays the go-to for a covered outdoor deck and frozen cocktails when the Bandstand crowd spills out at 9.
A note on the Labor Day weekend rebuild: expect the parade to hold its usual noon step-off from Pennsylvania Avenue and Garfield Parkway, with the Bandstand awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m., a headliner at 7:30, and the drone show layered onto fireworks that evening. If you host, plan the deck menu for a late night. This one will run past 10.
There is a real-estate observation buried in this year's calendar shift, and it is worth stating plainly. In a typical year, Bethany's rental turnover peaks the week after July 4, and the second half of the season quiets down as families rotate out. This year, the anniversary programming has back-loaded the town. The Labor Day parade, the drone show, and the Jazz Funeral will pull a July-4-sized crowd into the first week of September, which is normally the softest week for on-street activity. Owners in the walkable core should expect one extra weekend of full-street energy, and owners in the north-of-town and Sea Colony corridors should expect the Route 1 traffic pattern to hold about a week longer than usual.
For year-round residents, that is mostly a scheduling detail. For anyone weighing a fall listing or a September closing walk-through, the practical read is that the first genuinely quiet weekend this year will land closer to September 12 than September 5. Plan showings and moving trucks accordingly.
